The Si Satchanalai ancient town plan is an irregular quadrilateral. There are three rings of town walls built alongside the Yom River, enclosing Phanom Phloeng and Suwankhiri hills inside the boundary. The outer rings of town walls on the west, north and south sides are built with moats and ramparts. The eastern side uses the Yom River as a natural moat. The inner ring of town walls is built of laterite and extends approximately 1.5-1.9 meters in width, 2.6-3.8 meters in height and 3.79 kilometers in length. The walls are fitted with sixteen gates and four forts. Ramnarong Gate, ประตูรามณรงค์, is the largest gateway of Si Satchanalai town, 3.6 meters in width. In the past it was the main gate, being comprised of a moat and fort for defensive purposes. Information from an historical marker at the site. ผังเมองศรีสัชนาลัยมีลักกษณะเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยมดำนไม่เท่า มีกำแพงเมองสามชั้นเลียบแม่น้ำยมโอบล้อมเขาพนมเพลิง และเขาสุวรรณคีรีเอาไว้กลางเมือง มีการขุดคูน้ำกว้าง ๒๐ เมตรและทำคันดินเป็นกำแพงชั้นนอกด้านทิศตะวันตก ทิศเหมือและทิศใต้ ยกเว้นด้านทิศะวันออกที่ใช้แม่น้ำยมเป็นคูเมืองธรรมชาติ กำแพงเมืองชั้นในก่อด้าวยศิลาแลงกว้ง ๑.๕ - ๑.๙ เมตร ความสูง ๒.๖ - ๓.๘ เมตร ความยาวโดยรอบ ๓.๗๙ กิลเมตร มีประตูเมืองทั้งหมด ๑๖ ประตู พร้อมด้วยป้อมจำนวน ๔ แห่ง ประตูรามณรงค์แห่งนี้เป็นประตูที่มีขนาดใหญ่ที่สุดในเมืองศรีสัชนาลัย จึงสันนิษฐานว่าเป็นทางเข้า-ออกหลักของเมือง ปากประตูกว้าง ๓.๖ เมตร หันไปทางทิศตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ด้านหน้าประตูเป็นป้อมรูปสี่เหลี่ยมผืนผ้าขนาด ๒๐.๕ x ๗.๕ เนตรสำหรับป้องกันข้าศึก ข้อมูลจากสัญลักษณ์ทางประวัติศาสตร์ที่เว็บไซต์ Wikimapia location> |
